BMW doesn’t always have to mean “Bring My Wallet”

Did you know that the average Bugatti owner has 84 cars, 3 jets and 1 yacht? Well maybe some of us aren’t quite Bugatti owners yet but still enjoy the style and driving feel that comes with premium European vehicles.

With a premium vehicle, however, comes a premium responsibility to keep a closer eye on the car’s mechanical health. Preventative maintenance is the name of the game with most of these cars, and you’ll find your Mercedes, Range Rover, or BMW will thank you kindly for keeping up with its needs. Oftentimes this is difficult (and expensive!) to do through a dealer once the car has reached the ends of its warranty. This is where knowing a good indie comes in handy.

So what is an “indie”?

An indie is simply an “Independent” auto repair shop that is not associated with a dealer. Why would you want to go to an independent repair shop? Well, mainly because if you find a well- respected shop with an experienced technician, you’ll get the same–if not better–service that you would from a dealer at a fraction of the cost. Aside from that, is can often lead to a much more personalized relationship with the person who is actually going to be taking your car apart every now and then. I’m sure any enthusiastic M-series BMW owner would appreciate that.

Is there a difference between independent repair shops?

You bet! Besides the knowledge and experience required to repair or maintain these cars competently, in some cases you may be hard pressed to find a technician who will be completely up front and honest with you. So the SMG pump on your 2004 BMW 325ci convertible is failing? Most have no clue what in the world that means, and it would be pretty easy for a shady technician to take advantage of that fact and maybe squeeze a few more dollars out of you.

If you find a great technician who has reliable skills and is honest, you cling to that connection for dear life. It will save you a ton of money and headaches later down the road.
